Foundations of Math is a content course focused on developing and deepening teachers' mathematical understanding in order to:

  • shift educator beliefs and pedagogy about mathematics instruction
  • position the educator to understand and implement evidence-based practices for mathematics
  • improve mathematics achievement for every learner, including those with Individualized Education Programs

Participants will explore components of number sense, connect critical developmental stages, and make instructional decisions that develop and leverage learners' number sense and improve math understanding.

Carlos Sosa
Carlos Sosa is a Math Accessibility Specialist with Alt+Shift. Alt+Shift partners with ISDs in the state of Michigan to support and develop instructional capacity of math educators and to support the teaching of mathematics for students with disabilities. Prior to joining Alt+Shift's team, Carlos worked as a special education teacher for 6 years, serving students with emotional impairments and severe behavioral needs at both the middle and high school levels. He has completed level 1 and level 2 training for Foundations of Math with Alt+Shift and served on implementation teams to develop math instruction in his most recent ISD of employment. Carlos also maintains a K-12 Administrator's Certification since completion of his degree in Educational Leadership in December of 2021. He is passionate about the work he engages in and collaboration with educators across the state!
Rachel Tabron
Rachel Tabron is a math accessibility specialist with Alt+Shift. Rachel holds a Bachelor of Arts from Aquinas College and a Master of Education from Grand Valley State University. Rachel has over seven years of experience as a special education teacher, as well as seven years of experience as a special education supervisor. Rachel lives in Belmont, MI with her husband and two sons. She enjoys reading, chasing around her kids, crafting, and going on adventures.
